Cheers and Happy "eBaying"! Paul R. Wankle, Pres. Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton, CA THIS PARTICULAR 1954 STUDEBAKER CHAMPION STREET ROD - HISTORY Occasionally we come across a very special, unique vehicle that leaves even us at a loss for words! This 1954 Studebaker is one such vehicle. Unlike many "Home Builts" this car was not only built by a professional hot rod constructor, it was built for his personal use and used sparingly as his own car when it was completed over the course of a few years. The car began as a completely rust free Arizona car and underwent a comprehensive restoration with workmanship to a very high standard. Many hot rod aficionados have seen the car at our Pleasanton showroom and agree that the car would cost well in excess of $100,000.00 to have duplicated professionally. The odometer was zeroed out at the time and the car currently shows 12,324 miles. The Studebaker was sold by the original owner when he moved to Hawaii. The second owner had the "old school" flame job added by Squeeg's Kustoms in Chandler, AZ. The quality is spectacular.one of the best that we have ever seen. In 2004 the car was purchased by a gentleman in Elkhart, IN, a large scale and long-time collector and dealer in antique cars. At the time, the odometer read approximately 8000. Ray only drove the car about 900 miles in 6 years. He listed it for sale with an advertised price as high as $60,000.00 over a period of time. In April 2010 the Studebaker changed hands and was purchased by the current Northern California owner. At the time of purchase it had an odometer reading of 8,941 miles. The following represents a summary (not all) of the work completed by the current owner during the previous 3 years to "Sort" the car and use it with confidence for longer drives, attending shows and tours. The following represents over $12,500.00 in receipts not including the most recent owner's purchase price of the vehicle. - 06/03/2010, 9020 miles - Roseville Rod in Roseville, CA. Ron Kimball took these photos in the vineyards south of Livermore in the summer of 2012 at his request after seeing the car at the Pacific Coast Dream Machines car show in Half Moon Bay. A DRIVE IN THE STUDEBAKER Frankly, this car has it all. It has a great hot road appearance but benefits from reliable drive-line and professional construction. The result is a car that drives extremely well, does not leak, runs cool and, as a result of a powerful (but not "over-built" engine, runs strong and shifts great. The front disc brakes stop the car straight and true and the rebuilt suspension results in a very nice, comfortable ride. The interior amenities (A/C, multi-disc changer, and leather interior to name a few) are great additions making the care an excellent choice for long cruises. The glass is free from cracks and all of the windows (including the classic "vent" windows, operate perfectly. While the top has been chopped slightly, there is plenty of space in the interior and driver's over 6' 3" fit in the car. Best of all, the car has received a totally clean "Bill of Health" from a critical independent Hot Rod specialist and called "One of the Best examples I've seen in a long, long time." " I'd like to own this one."! Enough said. HISTORY - 1954 STUDEBAKER While the featured car in this auction is anything but stock, we always have some prospective buyers that have an interest in the history of original cars. Please keep in mind that the below history of the Studebaker applies to the car in its stock configuration, not this beautifully modified / upgraded example (More on the '54 in this auction later...) The 1953-1954 Studebaker Champion Regal Starlight / Starliner featured what was probably the outstanding American automotive design of the '50s, and certainly one of the all-time greats. The smooth Starliner hardtop and companion Starlight fixed-pillar coupe were mainly the work of Robert E. Bourke, chief of the Raymond Loewy studios at South Bend. The styling for the Starlight and Starliner was about as perfect as it could be: nothing was out of place, and there was nothing contrived or unnatural. The Starliner is the purer of the two in styling, but the Starlight holds together better because of the extra body rigidity conferred by its fixed roof pillar. Vertical grille teeth distinguish the 1954 Starlight and Starliner's from the toothless '53s. As in past years, the Champion versions were six-cylinder cars, identifiable externally by an S-on-a-V emblem on the hood and deck in place of the V-8 emblem found on the costlier Commanders. Studebaker's side-valve six was lighter than the V-8, providing better balance and less final understeer. The 1953-1954 Studebaker Champion Regal Starlight / Starliner was also capable of notable economy (especially with overdrive), though it offered far less performance than the V-8. The '53 Champion dashboards differed from Commander dash boards, grouping instruments under a single panel instead of housing them in hooded pods. Pluses of the 1953-1954 Studebaker Champion Regal Starlight / Starliner: ? Landmark American styling ? Still very affordable considering design merit ? Less numerous but cheaper than Commanders ? Strong appreciation potential ? Both coupe and hardtop are Milestone cars Minuses of the 1953-1954 Studebaker Champion Regal Starlight / Starliner: ? Serious rust issues especially in "Rust Zones" in the USA and around the world ? Indifferent brakes ? As with any collectible vehicle of this vintage we are unable to provide a warranty or guarantee of condition. However, we make every effort to accurately represent our vehicles, and highlight both positive items as well as areas that require attention. We ask that prospective buyers consider our eBay history/feedback, standing in the community, length of time in business, and other factors when purchasing a collectible vehicle from Classic Cars Ltd. Please keep in mind that minor cosmetic issues/flaws may be present on every vehicle (regardless of cost) including small chips, nicks, scratches, etc. that can be seen on even the best restoration, or even a relatively new, used "pre-owned" vehicle. Also, ownership of a collectible / specialty vehicle is more enjoyable if the owner is familiar with the "realities" of these unique cars. Unlike more modern day vehicles, these cars require regular, ongoing care/maintenance and some mechanical knowledge, patience, and understanding can make the experience considerably more pleasant. That said, collector / "specialty" car owners will tell you (emphatically) that they love their cars and wouldn't trade them for anything!! The information contained in this description is believed to be accurate but, in some instances, has been provided by the car's owner / owners or outside sources. As a result, we are unable to guarantee the accuracy of the information. We encourage verification of "numbers" and significant data prior to the purchase of any collector vehicle that you are considering. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: ? How long have they been in business? ? How much experience do they have with collector cars? ? How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive eBay feedback)? ? How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? ? Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? ? Does the seller have a Surety Bond to protect the financial transaction? ? What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? ? Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? ? Does the seller enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? ? Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales? ABOUT CLASSIC CARS LTD.
